Experimenting over the years with my photography

While digging through the hundreds of photographs, some from the archives and others from  just a few  months, days back.

Taken on a family trip to England back in 1992 when I was 18 yrs old.
35 mm konica camera. When digging out my old journals from the trip, even back then I was careful to note what I was trying to do with the shot. I climbed up to the top of the hill so I could get a better view of the window ruins at Kenilworth Castle in Warwichshire, England.

Door to a small city church tucked back on a side street deep within the city limits of London, England. This photo was taken December 27, 1999. What is missing in this photo which I had yet at this point to master was setting up the shot to include all the important points. I am missing in this frame the statue head that is just to the right of the door. The small additional details that would have made this a great photograph, I am missing.
I used a manual focus Nikon FM-10 camera with a zoom lens.

Fast forward to the year 2004, on a trip to Budapest I visited St. Istvan's basilica. This time rather than try to capture the entire church door, I chose to focus on just one part. The door was very ornate and I was afraid trying to capture it in its entirety would only lead to confusion, so instead I singled out just the door knocker.
Back in 2004 most people had switched over to digital cameras, however I was still dead set on using my trusted Nikon FM- 10 camera.

Present day, I have finally converted to a digital SLR, however still loyal to my brand. I now shoot most of my photos with a Nikon D5100 with a 50-200mm zoom vibration lens. This photos was taken just a few months back in the small ghost town of Locke, California. I like the ability to shoot more frames than with film, but what I like most about digital is the instant viewing. Now I can immediately correct my shot from the previous one instead of waiting for development of the film.

Garden photos from then to now

Taken December 2005 with my first digital camera an Olympus using xd cards. Just trying to show the color contrast with the red berries and the green leaves.

2008 using a Nikon D40 digital camera. Back then I thought this was a good photograph, however now looking back I can see the mistakes that were made. Rather than shoot from this side I should have used the point of view right in front of the two artichokes. Instead the back stem blocks both of the flowers.

2012, Nikon D5100 camera. Just fast forward a few years from 2008, I think I have learned and taught myself a bit more about perspective and the photograph. After spending the afternoon wandering around the community gardens in Whangarei New Zealand I discovered its not all about the most expensive camera gear that makes the shot, its all the perspective.
